City of Duluth Blatnik Bridge

After more than 50 years of service, MnDOT embarked on a multi-year rehabilitation project on the Blatnik Bridge joining Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. Part of this rehab included the replacement of the bridge’s pedestrian and traffic lights and wiring along the 400-foot long bridge. High-pressure sodium lights were switched out to more energy-efficient LEDs along the bridge – reducing the number from 216 to only 92 dimmable LED lights. Not only did the new lighting improve public safety, but it had the added benefit of reducing energy consumption by 60 percent.
