Established in 1978, the base is home to Submarine Group 10, Submarine Squadrons 16 & 20, Trident Training Facility, Trident Refit Facility, Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic, and other support-providing commands.
Kings Bay is currently homeport to both guided-missile and ballistic-missile Ohio class submarines and will be the homeport for half of the Navy’s new class of strategic deterrent submarines. The overhaul and restoration of Kings Bay dry dock is an important strategic modernization effort that will enable the facility to accommodate their first Columbia-class SSBN nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine. Until the first submarine is received, major repairs and facilities are underway including updating and constructing training and maintenance buildings, increasing pier space, and doing major repairs on the covered dry dock.
