Red Rock Hydro Plant

ArchKey Helps Client Revolutionize Renewable Energy with 36.4 Hydroelectric Plant

Our team provided design-assist services for the construction of a new 36.4-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Pella, IA, which was integrated into an existing dam reservoir. This project showcased the financial benefits of the design-assist process. By reviewing the initial engineering plans, including one-lines and general arrangements, our team successfully reduced cable usage by over 53,000 feet and raceway requirements by over 13,500 units. These optimizations resulted in saving more than 6,000 hours of labor for the client.

Scope of Work

In addition to the design revisions, our responsibilities encompassed procurement, installation, and startup of the balance of the plant (BOP) equipment, as well as the installation of Voith Turbine equipment and controls for the hydroelectric units. Our Utility team also managed the substation construction at the power plant and connected the 69kV line to the existing electrical grid.

The project, which spanned seven years, included setting up a temporary power system and handling its maintenance. We also undertook permanent electrical installations such as duct bank construction, powerhouse electrical work for the balance of plant, and switchyard electrical construction. This comprehensive involvement ensured the seamless integration and functionality of the hydroelectric facility.
